Abolish DHS

This site catalogues the various individuals, groups and organizations that are building resistance to Philadelphia’s practice of family separation through the Department of Human Services and Family Court

Against Family Separation

Philadelphia has four times as many children in foster care as New York City but 1/8 the population. We see this as evidence of systemic abuse targeting low-income families for profit, recreating the outcomes of slavery.

Against CUA

Community Umbrella Organizations or CUAs are nonprofits contracted by Philadelphia DHS who evaluate parents and the conditions of their homes and report to Philadelphia Family Court about whether or not parents are fit to retain custody of their children. We see these workers and being inherently unqualified and have experienced system corruption and misrepresentation for personal financial gain when it comes to family separation. We call for the abolition of CUA.

Against Anonymous Reporting

In Philadelphia it is possible to anonymously report a parent to DHS which triggers an investigation and often results in family separation or other state intervention to the family. By allowing for anonymous reporting there is a complete lack of consequences for frivolous or false reporting that can lead to devastating consequences for families. Abolish anonymous reporting!

Against Sealing of Court Records

As parents fighting for our kids, we have been hampered time and again by the practice of sealing the records of our court proceedings. The sealing of court records prevents third party investigations of malpractice and wrongdoing on the part of court officials. We demand parental access to all court transcripts and the freedom to share them with whomever we choose.

“If violence is wrong in America, violence is wrong abroad. If it is wrong to be violent defending black women and black children and black babies and black men, then it is wrong for America to draft us and make us violent abroad in defense of her. And if it is right for America to draft us, and teach us how to be violent in defense of her, then it is right for you and me to do whatever is necessary to defend our own people right here in this country.”
